Beth led the massive gelding into the Indoor Arena and over to where the mounting block was. He stood patiently while she mounted, his head held proudly yet not high. Once Beth had gathered up her reins and asked him for to move forward into walk, he did perfectly. Beth smiled, she loved riding Dave, he was perfect. Gentle, kind, obedient and to top it all off, a fabulous jumper!! The only disadvantage was his height, you didn't want to fall off a horse that big. Beth nudged him onto a trot and turned him into a cross pole, which he jumped without hesitation.

"C'mon Tom, quietly so we don't disturb them." Sam whispered, his hand firmly in his son's. He lead the way to the indoor arena, opening the door to the stands quietly so they could sit and watch. "He's HUGE!" Tom yelled! "Tom quiet!" Sam whispered urgently, putting a finger to his lips. Sam and Tom sat to watch. "How does she get that big horse to jump?" Tom asked in wonder. "Sit quietly and watch and you'll see." Sam answered simply, as eager as Tom.

Beth laughed and trotted Dave over to them. "Hey guys." She said, letting Dave have his head. "Isn't he gorgeous?" Beth said, smiling and clicking her tongue to let Dave know she wanted him to move. The thoroughbred happily obliged and trotted forward, then together they cantered over the 3ft upright.

Sam smiled sheepishly and Tom raced to the fence to see properly.

Beth smiled at Tom and then cantered Dave over a bigger fence, a 4ft oxer. He happily jumped it and Beth slowed him to a walk to let him have a breather. "Hey, Sam, why doesn't Tom jump on for a bit? Dave's safer than any other horses here." Beth said, happily.

Sam looked thoughtful. "Well, I suppose..." Except Tom was already in the arena, waiting for Beth to get off.

Beth smiled. "Okay, someone get me a parachute." She said, laughing as she took her feet out of the stirrups and swung her leg over the saddle and slid off. "Yep your too tall, boy." She said, stroking his neck. "Okay, Tom." Beth said, looping the reins through her arm and putting her helmet onto Tom.

"Hang on, the highest horse Tom has ridden was only 16.2, thats my own mare." Sam shook his head, worried. "Are you sure this will be okay?" He asked, turning to Beth.

"He'll be fine, I wouldn't put him on if I didn't trust Dave." Beth said, smiling at Sam.

"Your never gonna get on like that, Tom." Beth said, laughing. "Right, come here." She said and picked him up, putting him onto the huge horses back. "Okay?"

"Good good, I'm gonna walk round with you for a bit okay, 'cause it takes a while to get used to bigger horses." Beth said, smiling. "Okay, walk on Dave!!" And the big bay gelding walked on happily.

Tom smiled broadly as he sat up on the gelding. "Can you take me over some jumps then, if you insist to walk round with me?" Tom said quite rudely. "Tom!" Sam said from the stands. "Sorry." Tom said to Beth, apologetic.

"Thats okay, don't worry, I'll take you over some little ones in a minute, then maybe next time you ride him you can jump a little bigger." Beth said and turned Dave into a tiny cross pole.

Tom was ecstatic as he rode over the pole. "Sorry to take away your practice time like this, the plan was to just watch quietly." Sam said, sounding apologetic.

"Okay then, we'd better get you down. I've got two girls coming for a riding lesson in ten minutes and I don't even have the ponies they ride in from the field." Beth sighed, making a face and smiling at Sam.

"Hey, if you want, I could help you with that sort of thing?" Sam suggested. He needed a job, and since he loved kids and horses this sounded perfect.
